I would like to express my deepest sympathy and condolences to Norm's family. I met Norm through our mutual interest and involvement in Babe Ruth Baseball. He was the ultimate mentor, supporter but most of all a true friend and a first class individual.
When Norm decided to step down as the Midwest Plains Regional Commissioner, he gave me an opportunity to succeed him. I was both excited and nervous. Those were some big shoes to fill as Norm was an icon and very highly respected. True to form, Norm was there every step of the way to help me with the transition and put me on a path to succeed. Whenever I had questions, needed some guidance or advice I could always count on Norm's experience, interest and knowledge to help me out. Again, the ultimate mentor. I could not have asked for a better teacher.
I have a tremendous amount respect and admiration for Norm, in some cases he reminded me of my own father. Norm gave me me a number of opportunities and took a chance on me, for that I will be forever grateful. I am better for having met and been influenced by Norm as he had a profound impact on me personally and professionally.
At each Midwest Plains Regional Baseball/Softball Tournament, the Norm and Colleen Travis Sportsmanship Award is presented to the teams displaying the best character and sportsmanship. This has been done for several years and it will continue to recognize and honor them. I know Norm was very proud of this and it is a fantastic way to recognize and honor their contribution.
He was one of kind, a great ambassador and true friend. I will miss Norm's infectious smile, sense of humor and personality.
RIP Norm.
